I never knew a home really needed gutters until I purchased my first house. The home was in great shape but the gutters had been neglected. Due to the shrubs, obstacles, and my fear of heights it took me a while to get around to cleaning them myself, even though it was a priority. After living in the home for a week I noticed that there was a divot in the ground all the way around the house. The foundation was also made of cement. I realized that the gutters were clogged and that the rainwater was just rolling right over the top of them as if they weren’t there. I wondered, what if I didn’t have gutters? It looked as if the water was just going to sit beside the foundation. The next day it rained out, and after it was done, I checked, and sure enough the ground was drenched and their were puddles beside the foundation in multiple places. Soon after I cleaned out the gutters which were full of twigs, leaves, and other gunk, and set up a downspout to direct the water away from the home. I would soon realize that hornets had made a nice nest in my dry downspout since no water was going into it. This ended up being an unpleasant experience! I then learned that I needed to clean my gutters out at least once a year- sometimes even more due to the trees (and the neighbor’s trees). Thankfully there were no pine needles around!
The first time I heard of gutter guards I thought it was bologna. Could they really help? I never thought they did until the second home I bought had them installed. They were a cheap gutter guard from the local hardware store and obviously someone had installed them themselves, as they constantly fell down and out of place. I thought “these things are junk”. And, they were. They worked a little bit, but just couldn’t hold up to heavy rains or sticks or gumballs dropping onto them, and they just kind of popped into place, and right back out of place.

After learning all of this and absorbing some of the owner’s knowledge of the product, and seeing it in action, I am completely sold! It actually speaks for itself. If you live in an area with a lot of leaves, or have gutters that you can’t get to or simply don’t want to get to, the product is pretty much mandatory unless you want to hire someone once a year to come and clean them out.
